Gympie Cats: Season final thriller

Australian Rules: It has been a difficult season for the Gympie Cats women's team but they will be hunting a win as they play their last game of the year today.

It will be a replay of the season opener as the Cats take on the Maryborough Bears.

After cancellation of a couple of games because of the wet weather, the Cats missed out on a grand final appearance by eight points. The Cats will go into the game coming off an 86-nil loss to Hervey Bay Bombers but Cats coach Tony Kirsopp could not praise his side more for their effort.

"It was a cracking game," he said.

"They (Bombers) are a great squad, the girls knew going into the game they had to step up, which they did."

What the score won't tell you is that in the last half the Cats kept the Bombers to just three goals, something that has not been done all season.

"Their coach actually came up to me after the game, that was some of the best defence they had seen all year," Kirsopp said.

"There are promising signs for next year."

Considering the difficulties with numbers, Kirsopp said it had been a great season and a good change from last year.

"We just needed a solid 15 players and they would have been one of the better sides in the competition," he said.

"If we can have a serious group together they would be hard to beat.

"I haven't minded the short season. Last year we played 15 games without a bye and travelled to Brisbane for half those games. So it was good this year to have it short and sweet."

Kirsopp said his side was pumped for the last game.

"We started with a win and hopefully we can finish with a win," he said.

Cats will travel to Port City Park, Maryborough, with kick-off at 5pm.
