Schoolgirl beats 4,000 kids to become cruise ship critic

IT'S not often a primary school student gets to advise on the final touches of a cruise ship production.

But this was the reality for Caloundra schoolgirl Lily Corliss who was selected over 4000 other budding performers to be the entertainment critic on P&O's Pacific Explorer before it sets sail from Sydney this June.

The Caloundra Christian College student said one day she'd like to take her dancing career to the seas and be a performer herself on a cruise line.

She thinks this aspiration was one of the things which set her a part from the other contestants.

"I want to be in front of people and get to see different countries,” she said.

"To see lots of different places and see how people live.”

Lily joined a panel of three other critics who were commenting on the food, adventure and design, chosen for her love of entertainment and dance.

The campaign was a part of the cruise liner's multi-million dollar refurbishment.

Lily said the experience was amazing to be a part of and was thankful everyone was so supportive of her.

She said she was sure everyone would love the on-board entertainment and there were a few other aspects she really enjoyed.

"The water slide was lots of fun and the food was really good,” she said.

Lily's mum Helen couldn't be more proud of her daughter.

"They said more than 3000 kids applied for the role of the adventurer,” she said.

"Then they chose three critics - it blows your mind that someone would chose your kid.”

Helen said experience was amazing for her daughter to be a part of at such a young age.

"It was really intimidating but when you got there it really wasn't,” she said.

"They got to get their hair and make-up done and for a little girl that's a big thing.”

The ship will showcase its refurbishment from June 22.
