SCHOOL children filled the Warwick Pig and Calf sale yesterday with kids looking for a chance to pick up some bargains these school holidays.

All kinds of birds from budgies to ducks seemed to be the most popular amongst the children.

Brothers William and Cameron Reardon brought three chickens from the family home to sell at the weekly markets and were happy to walk away with an empty cage at the end of the day.

"It's our first time selling anything at the pig and calf sale," Cameron said.

"We were selling our chickens because they were not laying any eggs."

The two Warwick students said they would be back again next week to see if they could find a more productive chicken to take home.

"We want some chickens because they lay eggs for our breakfast," Cameron said.

Another pair of brothers, William and Jackson Riley joined their friend Connor Clark to check out the markets but weren't keen on taking an animal home.

"We just wanted to have a look around," William said.

"The pigs are pretty interesting."

Plenty of new faces joined the regulars at the saleyards to see what was on offer with a number of couples and families passing through town on holidays. The first two sales of the year have attracted a huge crowd of visitors before the school term starts.

Numbers are expected to remain high next week with most schools set to start back on January 27.
