Forget about online, scammers are already in your home

IF IT sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

What happened to scammers in the good old days?

They are not just Nigerian princes offering large sums of money anymore.

Current scams doing the rounds include a Facebook friend request with a sob story from someone who looks suspiciously like Katy Perry, an 'invitation' to join a web domain that looks like an invoice you might pay without thinking, and a house rental listed on Gumtree where you pay a real bond for a fake house.

What will they think of next?

I've had my fair share of scammers looking my way.

The ATO has realised they owe me money if I click on the link, long lost distant relatives have left me money, and the Commonwealth Bank requires me to log in to update my account details.

I don't think so.

Just glancing in my email junk box I have two new ones:

'We have approved a cash sum of 1 MILLION POUNDS Grant Donation for you' and ' New Pill May Cure Gray Hair; Permanently.'

Hang on, I may have to go back and check out that last again.

A scammer is a person who swindles you by means of deception or fraud.

Well, that sounds a lot like two little members of my household.

Children learn the art of scamming from an early age.

I'll admit there were times in my childhood I was too sick to go to Sunday night mass, but was magically better when Wonderful World of Disney came on the television.

I may have even promised to clean my room in exchange for mum to buy me a new toy with no intention of it ever happening.

But my kids are far more superior in the scamming department than I ever was.

Sending them off to clean their room I can hear sounds of progress, yet an inspection an hour later I find it looks the same as before.

And let's not forget finances.

The kids have been scamming our money since they were born.

"I lost my jumper, I signed up for touch football and need new footy shoes, and I need a Book Week costume for Friday."

Sorry scammers, if you are looking my way for any cash opportunities.

My kids have beaten you to it.
