Phishing in the wrong pond

IT WAS probably not the smartest thing a scammer could do - send a hoax Telstra email to an employee.

But that's what happened this week.

Manager of Telstra Gympie Lauren Blackburn received an email on Thursday that advised her BigPond service might be disconnected as there was a payment problem and she needed to provide new billing details.

"The scary thing is it looks legitimate," she said.

There's a link on the email that opens a page, which looks a lot like the Telstra website, and asks for your log on and other details.

The email prompted Mrs Blackburn to immediately warn customers about the hoax.

On Telstra Gympie's Facebook page a message has been posted that says the email is not from Telstra and untrue. "The message is a phishing scam designed to trick Telstra account holders into supplying personal and financial information to internet-based criminals," the warning read.

This is just one of many scams doing the rounds.
