Same-sex rally gets green light

ORGANISERS of a rally for same-sex couples in Toowoomba have re-set a date for the demonstration after an issue with council approval put a spanner in its works in July.

Organiser Emma Bust said council and police had given the all-clear for the Love is Worth Fighting For rally to go ahead on Saturday, October 6.

"Last time we ended up just holding a picnic with about 100 people coming throughout the day," she said.

"We're hoping this one will be bigger.

"It's not just a rally we have planned - it's also a good family day out with lots of entertainment and music."

Mrs Bust is a married, Catholic-raised heterosexual mother-of-two who felt compelled to bring the issue of marriage equality "out of the closet of the Toowoomba community".

She was aware of a conservative element in the city's community who would oppose the rally, but did not fear it.

"I'm more than happy for them to have their say on the matter, but we have that same right," she said.

"They don't have to agree with us.

"No one is forcing them to come down or do anything they don't want to do."

Mrs Bust will be running a sausage sizzle and cupcake stall to raise money for the Queensland Association for

Healthy Communities to help continue its work providing preventative health services to the same-sex community.

She has asked "heterosexual allies" to come along and show their support for same-sex rights and marriage equality.

"I think it's important that all of us care, we are all human beings and we live in a country that should be affording the same rights to its citizens," she said.

"I was raised to believe that we should treat others as we would like to be treated, and that standing up for our friends and family was a courageous act.

"Stand up for your fellow citizens and demand that they be treated equally."

  • The rally will be held at Frogs Hollow in Queens Park from 1pm to 4pm on Saturday, October 6.
