SANCTIONS on travel and business dealings with Myanmar will be lifted, but arms controls will remain in place, Foreign Minister Bob Carr says.
Senator Carr said travel and financial sanctions against the south-east Asian nation would be lifted in coming weeks to encourage "democratic reform".
The announcement came after two days of meetings with senior Myanmar officials, including President Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
"Myanmar has made great strides over the past year, though there is more to be done," Senator Carr said.
"The point has been reached where lifting sanctions is the best way to promote further progress," Senator Carr said.
