RUNNING ON EMPTY: Town completely runs out of fuel

DRIVERS heading out west this weekend should be wary of filling up the tank before setting out.

Maranoa Regional Council's My Maranoa Facebook page has put the warning out that drivers would be unable to source fuel in Surat until early next week.

"Council has been advised that there is currently no fuel available in Surat," the post read.

"At this stage the fuel station owner anticipates that the fuel will be unavailable until early next week.

"Council encourages residents and visitors to plan ahead when travelling through nearby towns, to ensure they have enough fuel over the coming days."

The tiny town has a population of 426, but drivers travelling along the Carnarvon Hwy from St George to Roma often use it as a convenient stop-off to stretch their legs and top up the fuel tank.
