Roma athlete prepares for world championships

Duathlon: David Schefe was "thrilled” when he heard of his selection for the ITU World Multisport Championships, to be held in Denmark next month.

The Roma sportsman will represent Australia in the duathlon at the International Triathlon Union contest.

He is training vigorously in preparation for his overseas trip next week.

Schefe said he was what some would call a fresh face to the sport, having only raced in two duathlons before his selection.

"Considering the Springfield duathlon last year was my first race in this sport, I was really surprised,” he said.

"My wife and I discussed the trip and we decided it was a once-in-a-lifetime event: It's not every day you get to represent your country.

"The competition is age-group based so I will be competing against people of a similar age (50-54 years).

"There are a number other sports on the program too.

"I received my uniform last Friday, and I have upgraded my equipment, so I'm ready to go.”

A usual day for Schefe involves braving the winter weather for a cool, early- morning sprint session.

When asked about his hopes for the competition, Schefe said looked forward to meeting new competitors.

"I've been training hard, but we'll have to see,” he laughed.

The duathlon portion of the competition will be held on Sunday, July 8, in Odense.
