Water supply gets crucial upgrade after Cyclone power crisis
THE next time a cyclone knocks out the power in Rockhampton we won't be facing a water supply crisis thanks to a major investment into the Glenmore water treatment plant.
As part of $9.3 million upgrade of the facility the pump station now comes complete with a diesel generator capable of supplying back-up power to the entire water treatment plant site.
When Cyclone Marcia caused a power blackout across the region in 2015 there was fear in the community that we would run out of water before Ergon Energy staff restored power to the Glenmore plant.
Chair of Council's Water Committee Cr Neil Fisher said the Fitzroy River Water facility was now guaranteed to operate come rain, hail... or cyclone.
He said the generator was a proactive approach to future natural disasters and ensuring sufficient water supply for the Rockhampton and Livingstone communities.
"The results have shown that the generator can independently provide enough power for the plant and associated pump stations to produce and distribute at least 60 mega litres of drinking water each day to the community, which is more than the average daily water consumption of the community," Cr Fisher said.
"It's a very impressive level of post-disaster contingency for the Rockhampton and Gracemere communities as well as the adjoining Livingstone Shire Council that receive water from the Glenmore water treatment plant."
"This great outcome means that in future events similar to TC Marcia, the site will be able to operate continuously during power outages to meet the water supply needs of the community."
The plant also received a complete electrical and mechanical upgrade.
Further improvements include a reduction in power consumption for the site of up to 30%.
