A SUNSHINE Coast resident has published terrifying security footage showing the moment hoodlums fire what appears to be a flaming rocket at a block of units.

Buddina's Mark Sanderson published the footage captured on Friday night, recalling how he was awakened by "a loud shot".

He said he and other residents were alerted to the sounds of rocket fire shortly after he went to bed.

The balcony of the neighbouring units were on fire, and he grabbed an extinguisher and phone and raced to the units to help.

Mr Sanderson said the building was quickly evacuated and residents had reacted quickly, dousing the flames that erupted with buckets of water, as the fire threatened to enter the units.

He said firefighters arrived about 10 minutes later and put out the remains of the fire, with police starting an investigation into the incident.
