Brisbane Roar not running scared, says skipper

FOOTBALL: Brisbane Roar captain Matt Smith vehemently denied his team was scared of playing the Wanderers in their own backyard, ahead of tonight's clash at Pirtek Stadium.

The men in orange have not beaten the Western Sydney club at its Parramatta fortress in its short two-season history.

But with Smith's team having already wrapped up the Premiers' Plate, Smith (pictured) bristled at suggestions by Wanderers defender Jerome Polenz the Roar was scared of venturing south.

"We're not scared of anybody. We're not going down there thinking 'we haven't won down there'," Smith said.

"I don't mind it, but do I read anything into it? No."

The Roar will have a full complement of players with Luke Brattan and Ivan Franjic back from injury.

"When there are finals coming up, it's like the medicine is better. It heals the players quicker," Roar coach Mike Mulvey laughed.

The Newcastle Jets have named Ben Kantarovski in place of the injured Zenon Caravella for tonight's clash against Melbourne Victory at Hunter Stadium.

The Mariners had an eventful trip west yesterday for tonight's game against Perth Glory, with their plane forced to make an emergency landing in Adelaide after a smoke alarm went off.

The Airbus A330 landed without incident.

Glory announced yesterday that former Socceroo Jacob Burns has retired.

Burns, 35, played for Leeds in the English Premier League and the Champions League and won 12 caps for his country.
