Road rule offenders on Fraser Coast to pay for upgrades

IT'S a case of what comes around, goes around as speeding drivers pay for projects aimed at slowing themselves and other speedsters down.

Over the coming months, fines from road rule offenders will pay for new flashing school zone signs at Torbanlea, Yarrilee, Kawungan and Maryborough West State schools and Maryborough Special School.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council and PCYC Hervey Bay are also being helped along by those caught driving over the speed limit.

The council recently scored $27,500 to install signs at 65 school crossings around the region and the PCYC will spend its $3600 on a bike education program for 630 local school children.

Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey (pictured) said speeding fines were a necessary evil when it comes to keeping our roads safe.

He said the revenue was put to good use as the State Government worked towards reducing Queensland's road toll to zero deaths.

"The Palaszczuk government refuses to accept road trauma as an inevitable part of using the roads, that's why we're working toward a vision of zero road deaths and serious injuries on Queensland roads and committed to reducing road fatalities to below 200 by 2020," he said.
