Riders smashed after sidecar crash at Carina

MORAYFIELD'S Dave Oliver will remember his return trip to Carina Speedway for a long time.

After competing almost 20 years ago at the circuit, Oliver returned with Jeff Barth to race in the sidecars on the first night of bikes - the first bike event in the region for almost a decade.

Unfortunately, the night would end with both in hospital after a heavy crash.

Sitting in third in the race, both riders were hurled in the air after making contact with the front two sidecars, who had slowed down in front of them.

With Oliver flying highest out of the two riders, he suffered the worst of the injuries, with a fractured right wrist, right ankle, and a spiral fracture to his right tibia.

The 49-year-old is in hospital waiting for surgery on his leg and ankle, which will happen today if the swelling goes down.

Meanwhile his teammate is waiting on results for potential damage to his hip and pelvis.

With Oliver not fit enough to speak, his partner Kirsten Bain said he was in a good mood despite being injured.

"Dave's in really good spirits but obviously is in a lot of pain," she said.

"We're not sure how long our hospital stay will be and it all depends on when he has surgery."

"The Bundaberg Hospital and staff has been amazing."

Bain said Oliver loves to race and has already been in the wars before.

"He's been racing for 20 years and been a Queensland state sidecar champion in 2005," she said.

"His worst injury prior to Saturday was a severely damaged shoulder in 2014, which required extensive surgery.

"He loves the thrill of racing and the adrenaline rush. The feeling is indescribable."

Despite the incident, promoter Pete Basmadjian said it was a great night of racing with 1800 spectators turning up.
