Resorts snap up hospitality staff

WORKERS who were made redundant when Laguna Whitsundays closed down have been given a lucky break.

Ocean Hotels and Tourism's Michelle Boucher heard about Laguna Whitsundays shutting down and offered them positions at Long Island Resort and Club Crocodile Resort.

Mrs Boucher, the general manager of the two resorts, said she heard about the Laguna Whitsundays closing and immediately contacted Member for Whitsunday and Tourism Minister Jan Jarratt's office to see if she could help.

"I've got four starting tomorrow but we are happy for more," Mrs Boucher said.

"We will be flat out over the Easter period and need to get some more hands on deck."

Workers who have accepted the positions praised the work of Ms Jarratt's office for liaising between the two parties.

"My priority from the outset was to assist affected workers to find employment," Ms Jarratt said yesterday.

"Long Island and Club Croc have been outstanding in responding to the call to arms put out by The Daily Mercury.

"I'm glad local families will not have to go through the uncertainty of searching for a job, as a result of the financial mismanagement of this property."

The Rapid Response Team has been activated and anyone still searching for work can contact either Ms Jarratt's electorate office or the Rapid Response Team on 1800 035 749.

Mrs Boucher said she encouraged all available workers to send their resumes to her at michelle.boucher@oceanhotels.com.au.

Laguna Whitsundays' owner David Marriner could not be contacted for comment yesterday.
