ALMOST 15,000 Capricornia residents are still to make the switch over to digital television before December 6.

Digital Switchover Taskforce chief executive Nerida O’Loughlin said they didn’t want to repeat the same situation in Victoria, where residents were rushing to make the switch within the last week.

“So far the Capricornia region is doing really well with its switchover, and we think there shouldn’t be too much of a problem with getting the remaining 19% of the area to make the switch before deadline,” Ms O’Loughlin said.

“But we want to avoid the rush of people going out to get a set-top box or HD television at the last minute or even missing the switch by even a week.”

Ms O’Loughlin said yesterday that the region’s switchover rate was good at 81%, but 83% was the average conversion percentage in other areas.

But the chief executive said it’s important to let those who don’t already know that the change would be happening soon and to start getting ready for it sooner rather than later.

“We just want people to know that it’s happening and that there’s plenty of information and support available,” she said.

Ms O’Loughlin also wished to tell the public that those who hold any form of pension card have access to a free set-top box, installation and a in-home demonstration so they may get the best assistance possible under the Household Assistance Scheme.

She also wanted to remind people that you didn’t necessarily have to pay for a brand new television, but a simple set-top box.

“You can buy them in most electrical stores from $60 to $80, and they can connect to most televisions, even if they’re quite old.

“But it’s also good to check all of your antennas and cables as well, because you’ll find most people haven’t checked or updated them for a long time.”
