Region at high bushfire risk, 70 grassfires in eight weeks

THE heat is on in Mackay after the region had 70 grassfires in eight weeks.

Residents have been warned to get their safety plans in place after sophisticated mapping technology found 890 properties were at very high risk from bushfires.

There were 70 grassfires between August 1 and September 30.

Throughout Queensland, the highest numbers of grassfires recorded during the same period were 225 in Ipswich, 184 in Rockhampton, 167 at the Sunshine Coast, 82 in Toowoomba and 75 in Bundaberg.

One of Queensland's top fire officers said some good rain and green grass meant Mackay was relatively safe from major fires.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service conducted five burns in the Northern Great Barrier Reef region over the past few months to reduce fuel hazards

Rural Fire Service Queensland Assistant Commissioner Neil Gallant said residents needed to prepare while the going was good.

"Mackay's still fairly green and they've had a lot of rain south of Mackay, through to St Lawrence," Mr Gallant said. "It's hard to predict months ahead but at this stage the potential there is below average at the moment.

"So we're probably looking at a lower than average season in that area.

"Property owners ... need to get in now when there has been a little bit of rain around and conditions are still okay.

"Because once it really starts to dry out conditions will be very difficult to do controlled burns."

Emergency Services Minister Jack Dempsey said the RFSQ used sophisticated mapping technology to identify the properties that faced high fire dangers.

"We want all Queensland families to remain safe this bushfire season and our mapping technology has allowed us to directly target properties at risk," he said.

"They will be provided with a flyer and fridge magnet with information on what different bushfire warnings mean and how they should prepare for a bushfire.

"If you receive this information in the mail you will know that the RFSQ has identified your property as being at risk of being impacted by bushfire."

National Parks Minister Steve Dickson said QPWS had reduced fuel hazards over the past few months.

"Reducing fuel hazards is particularly important in managing the potential threat of fire to human life and property," Mr Dickson said.
