Regal duty to stop dangerous drivers
POLICE will be out in full force over the long weekend as they crack down on bad drivers.
Road police will patrol back routes, dangerous roads and busy highways from Friday over the four-day Operation Regal.
Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said if the community remained complacent the number of lives lost on the roads would continue to skyrocket.
Motorists caught speeding could be hit with: A $282 fine and one demerit point for speeding by up to 10km/h over the limit; A FINE of $443 fine and two demerit points if caught speeding by between 10-14km/h; A $645 fine and three demerit points for going 15-24km/h over the limit; and, AUTOMATIC loss of licence for going anything faster than 24km/h faster than the limit.
Operation Regal will run until Monday.
The blitz comes after Victoria road toll increased this morning, when police revealed a man had died from injuries sustained during a Corio motorbike crash last week.
