Referral reversal: skin care specialist refers to doctors

BECAUSE of the nature of their jobs which ensure truckies are exposed to the sun, many end up with skin cancers.

Some of these nasties are found on the shin part of the legs.

Because of a lack of skin required to stitch a wound after an excision, many GP doctors who bulk bill will refer patients to a specialist.

Which results in the sufferers having to pay out of expensive gap fees.

One Victorian truckie who travels interstate accidentally found a GP at a Queensland Health Centre who will do excisions on the shin.

He has had several removed by the GP and has referred other truckies to the good doctor.

"Normally doctors refer skin cancer patients with shin carcinomas to specialists but I am referring some to the GP so it is like referral reversal," he said.
