Crowds put rodeo on calendar

THE highly successful Mt Perry Rodeo on Saturday has secured its annual spot on the regional calendar.

About 700 people from places including Mackay, Emerald and Brisbane turned up for the action-packed day, which pleased organisers.

Rodeo committee spokesman Greg Wallace said the crowd was “a long way up” from the previous rodeo, which was held in 2009.

Seasonal weather was to blame for the lull in rodeos held in the town, but Mr Wallace said the committee was confident the event would return on an annual basis.

“The committee is very pleased with the result and attendance,” he said.

The highlights of the day were the open saddle and bull rides, which Mr Wallace said offered the most entertainment.

Monto man Kevin Purcell won the open saddle, while Justin Paton took out first place in the bull riding.

Mr Wallace said despite a “few bumps and bruises”, the stock were reasonably well behaved.

“That's all part of it,” he said.
