'For lease' sign slapped on Anzac legend's memorial

GALLIPOLI legend Billy Sing's memorial in Brisbane's West End was covered up last week by a real estate agency's For Lease sign.

According to The Brisbane Times, the building's owner wanted to lease out a warehouse and two car parks in the building and asked real estate agent Nick Zervos to find customers.

Mr Zervos hired a sign company, which attached the sign over the brass plaque honouring Trooper Sing.

RSL district president Barry Vains said if it was true, it was "appalling".

"Certainly the RSL would be looking to preserve something like that," Mr Vains said.

"One of our core objectives is that we will remember the people of the past."

Mackay RSL historian Col Benson said Billy was well known amongst veterans.

"Sadly, a lot of people don't respect history of any kind. If you don't treasure history you are bound the mistakes," Mr Benson said.

"It's a crying shame we have people who put a business venture above their history. People that do business are able to do it in this country because of the sacrifices made."

Member for Whitsunday Jason Costigan will be visiting the memorial site in West End today.

"After the First World War, Billy Sing returned home to Proserpine to a hero's welcome," Mr Costigan said.

"He was an absolute legend.

"In honouring the fallen, we say 'lest we forget'; however, given what's happened here, it seems that some people actually want us to forget."

C Property is the real estate agency that is attempting to lease the business space, and covered the plaque with the advertising sign. C Property has been contacted for comment.
