Raelene on final stretch for charity's $100k goal
FIVE years ago, Raelene Wells was inspired to achieve a goal set by her mum before she passed: raise $100,000 for breast cancer.
"The charity was established as just an idea, many many years ago mum wanted to raise money for a community centre in Brisbane and she held a fair,” Mrs Wells said from her stall at the Mackay Show.
"She didn't raise anywhere near enough to what she needed to turn two units into a community centre for the underprivileged children, but she did raise $10k and pricked the ears of the local government.”
Mrs Wells said after representatives from the council heard about the fair, they donated over $200,000 to the cause to help push the community centre forward.
When the project started in 2013 after losing her mum the year before, Mrs Wells said she had taken it upon herself to follow in her footsteps in the hope of saving at least one person's life and set up the Pink Ribbon Charity Fair organisation.
"When I originally started Pink Ribbon Charity Fair in 2013, I wanted to raise $10,000 a year for 10 years,” she said.
"We are at six years now and we are about $7000 off that goal, so we're a little ahead.
"I will definitely make that this year, without a doubt with the community support and backing we will make that.”
The charity has been a full time passion project for Mrs Wells since it launched in 2013.
"Without my husband I wouldn't be able to do any of it, quite literally, I wouldn't event be able to put up a marquee without him,” she said.
Similarly, Mr Wells also shares a personal connection with charity his wife pioneered after losing his father to cancer.
"It is not all about making money though, hopefully I have saved the life of someone who has walked past and thought 'hey I have to go get a check up or mammogram',” she said.
