A NEW $2 coin to mark Remembrance Day has been criticised by a Tasmanian Aboriginal leader.

The coin, unveiled on Wednesday, features purple flowers and green leaves of rosemary, a herb traditionally worn on Anzac and Remembrance days to commemorate those killed in active service and other military operations.

The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre's Michael Mansell said the coin promoted white supremacy and ignored Aboriginal warriors and women and children slaughtered in the white invasion of Australia.

"The Government says the coin honours those killed and wounded in armed conflicts," Mr Mansell said.

"What they mean is those killed defending white Australia, not those killed by white Australia."

A Royal Australian Mint spokeswoman said: "This Remembrance Day coin is about remembering all Australians including indigenous Australians who have died in war conflict over the past 100 years.

"Other themes have been taken into consideration for future releases."
