Queensland Weekender road trip through CQ

THE Queensland Weekender crew is hitting the road this week in search of the "great road trips in our region".

The episode will cover key drive journeys like Dig the Tropic, the Capricorn Coast scenic loop, Rochampton local drives and the drives on offer around the Sandstone Wilderness.

Mount Hay Gemstone Tourist Park at Blackdown Tableland National Park, Pat's Blue Gem Caravan Park will all receive a visit when the Channel 7 crew roll into The Gemfields on Thursday.

Rubyvale Hotel owners Bruce and Wendy McFarlane said the show's tour through The Gemfields was "tremendous".

"We are very excited," Wendy said.

"We have a regular clientele of locals and sapphire miners, but a big part of our trade are tourists.

"The families and grey nomads that travel through are very important to us."

Before buying the two-time Queensland Hotel Association Best Bush Pub, almost five years ago, Wendy couldn't have told you where to find sapphires in Queensland.

"It was my husband's idea to come out here… but I was easily bought with the promise of good wine and sapphires," Wendy joked.

"Getting your name out there is very difficult, so something like The Queensland Weekender that helps tell our story is really important."

Getting out on the road and having an Australian adventure in the bush, was all part of the appeal of the Gemfields, Wendy said.

"City people get out here and they're like 'woah', they think they're in another world," she said.

"There is a little pioneer in all of us that thinks we've found this place before anyone else, and that maybe we'll be the ones to find that $200,000 sapphire.

"It appeals to your bush spirit, and gambling instinct."
