Qantas reduces fares to Brisbane after NewsMail story

FOLLOWING the NewsMail's coverage regarding the price of Qantas flights from Bundaberg to Brisbane, the airline is now promoting reduced fares.

On Saturday, the NewsMail ran a story on Bundaberg business leaders calling on price equality from Qantas after Bundaberg travellers were hit with $485 one-way fares to Brisbane.

At the time, Qantas said the price spike was a "glitch" in the system and online prices were then adjusted to $169 to $369 depending on the date.

As of today, a one-way early morning flight from Bundaberg to Brisbane on July 11 will cost travellers $145, with prices varying depending on the date.

A Qantas spokeswoman said the sale was domestic-wide and had been in the pipeline for a while.

Bundaberg economics consultant Neil McPhillips said the price mix up highlighted an issue with the cost of early morning flights to Brisbane.

He said they were unfair when compared to flights from neighbouring regions Hervey Bay and Gladstone.

Today, Mr McPhillips said the reduced ticket prices were a great result for the region.

"It was a problem for our business community and we've acted, the NewsMail acted and I think the council has acted as well," he said.

The news comes as Bundaberg Regional Council seeks thoughts from residents about flight options to and from the Bundaberg Regional Airport through a flight survey.

In welcoming the news of the discounts, Mayor Jack Dempsey said passenger throughput was the overriding statistic when airlines considered additional services.

The Qantas sale ends on May 16.
