Producer wins $30,000 to travel the globe

A TREMENDOUS opportunity has been given to a rural beef producer who will now travel the globe to learn more about his craft.

Nicholas Krebs of Moura has been awarded a Nuffield Farming Scholarships for 2020 at the national conference last week and will receive a $30,000 bursary to travel the world.

Krebs manages a cattle property 20km west of Moura under the banner of Hewitt Cattle.

Krebs hopes to use his overseas experince to identify ways to improve the recuritment and retantion of employees in the beef sector.

“In my experience there’s been a decline in people wanting to come forward and take these roles in the beef industry,” Krebs said.

“We need to look at other ways around the world they attract and retain people in the industry.

“If we have the technology right it might be used as an attraction into the industry for the younger generations.”

Despite only just being named a scholar, Krebs has already determined where he will travel overseas.

“Our global program will take me to Chile, Argentina, the USA, Spain and Italy to kickstart the tour,” Mr Krebs said. “Then our personal travel will take me back to the USA to see how they work retaining staff generational through their known cowboy culture. Krebs was lucky enough to be selected by the panellists to attend the Awards Dinner and earn his scholarship.

“I want to bring back to my local area knowledge of how people using best practice to attract young people into an industry that will keep producing valuable food for the future.”
