Bushwalkers warned of dangers

BUSHWALKERS have been urged to be well-prepared before going bush these holidays.

Emergency Management Queensland said bushwalking was a popular holiday activity that had its dangers.

"Now is a great time of year to enjoy the outdoors, but it's important people know what they're up against and prepare accordingly," EMQ North Coast regional director Peter Twomey said.

"Inexperienced bushwalkers should seek local advice and information before setting out. On a longer bushwalk, or perhaps even a shorter walk on a challenging track, people need to pack enough supplies to be prepared for contingencies," he said.

Pack items such as first aid kits, thermal blankets, a change of clothing as well as appropriate sleeping equipment and plenty of water.

"It's crucial to check the weather forecast for your trip to ensure you've packed appropriate materials, and if weather is particularly adverse, it may be beneficial to reschedule your trip," Mr Twomey said.

"It's also a good idea to let friends and family know of your plans, including your route and estimated time your trek will take."
