Mackay residents can pray for Chan and Sukumaran

ANDREW Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were executed in Indonesia overnight, but Mackay residents can still pray for them and their families at Mackay's Holy Trinity Anglican Church.

Reverend Ann Dittmar-McCollim said the Gordon Street church had its doors open and a sign at the front saying "Stop by to pray for Myuran and Andrew and their loved ones".

Plenty of people had come through the doors in the past couple of days, she said.

"We see the family; we see the brothers and mothers and our hearts go out to them and I think it's good to have an opportunity to just stop and have a prayer for them," Rev Dittmar-McCollim said.

"It's become such a matter for public debate and compassion... because they are Australian and we can relate to them."

Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were expected to face the firing squad last night on Nusakambangan prison island in Indonesia.

They were arrested in 2005 as ringleaders of the infamous Bali Nine drug smuggling group.

The Holy Trinity Anglican Church has had the sign inviting people in to pray for the men on and off for the past few months as their deaths appeared imminent then were postponed several times.

Rev Dittmar-McCollim said no matter what happened people were welcome to come and share their grief.

And in light of other tragedies unfolding around the world, she said people were welcome to come in and contemplate what was happening in a bid to try to find some solace.

"I think we should be praying for the people of Nepal too, which is an even greater tragedy," she said.
