Aussie Helpers in Surat

MELBOURNE band the Prairie Oysters got their name from a delicacy of bull's testicles served up to one of its members in an American restaurant.

The Prairie Oysters on the menu in Surat this weekend was the band itself as the four piece entertained locals in the name of flood relief.

Prairie Oysters leader Tony Bonnici has been on the committee of farmer relief organisation Aussie Helpers for two years.

When Aussie Helpers founder Brian Egan asked the band to play in Surat, Tony jumped at the chance.

"We've done events for Black Saturday in Victoria but we've never been out this far west in Queensland before," Tony said.

"But people have been doing it tough out here and this is our way of doing something."

Despite rain, the band drew a good local crowd into the Surat Racecourse on Saturday night to raise more money for Aussie Helpers.

Mr Egan thanked the band for donating their time to play in Surat.

"They have come all the way from Victoria just for this concert," he said.

The event was organised by Surat local Ruth Dehnert whose River Rd property was flooded on multiple occasions.

"I am proud to be the organiser for this wonderful event especially for all property folk along the river and creeks that had the big water on their land," Ruth said.

Mr Egan said Aussie Helpers fixed up many properties in the River Rd area after the floods.

"The volunteers did everything for nothing, there were no costs for material or labour," Mr Egan said.

"All they asked from the owners was accommodation."
