Power supply cut to 2500

ERGON Energy reports that about 2500 customers have lost electricity supply in the Whitsundays and they will not have it restored tonight.

And field response crews are also trying to restore power supply to about 700 customers in the Sarina area.

"A tree fell across high voltage lines and disrupted power to 2,534 customers in the Cannonvale and Jubilee Pocket areas," Ergon Energy's Manager Regional Services John Dunn said.

"Also around 706 customers lost power in the Sarina area due to the prevailing weather conditions.

"We will be isolating and making safe but due to the conditions becoming too dangerous we have sent our response crews and staff home to secure their own properties and to ensure that they and their families are safe.

"We will not be responding to outages until it is safe to do so and the cyclone has passed and conditions have improved."

"Restoration will commence tomorrow when it is safe to do so and after a full assessment has been done to determine the scope of the damage caused by the cyclone."

Mr Dunn said home owners need to ensure they are prepared for the possibility of the cyclone impacting on power supply, damaging the electricity network and the possibility of lengthy outages.
