MORE than 70 angry Port Curtis locals attended a community meeting at the Port Curtis Road State School last night to oppose a freight company’s application to expand their depot.

Rockhampton Regional Council town planner Brett Bacon fielded dozens of questions at the meeting regarding whether council would approve Toll Holdings’ request to expand their depot and hold chemicals on the land.

Resident Amanda Nunn asked why a multi-national company may be allowed to expand their land when she was refused council permission to build a shed on her property because the region was classified as flood-plains.

Other residents argued their community was already disturbed by large businesses working late into the night, including machinery company Hastings Deering, and machinery and freight company Busby Group.

Mr Bacon said the council had not yet come to a decision on the application, but even if they opposed it “the buck did not stop there”.

He told locals Toll could appeal the decision in the Planning and Environment Court or simply ignore it.

Councillors Cherie Rutherford, Greg Belz and Glenda Mather also attended the meeting, but did not address the group.

Port Curtis Road State School principal Mandy Norton-McNeill said although the community assembly was held at the school, it had no opinion on Toll’s application.
