Port City Power just too patchy to get wins on the board
BASKETBALL: Gladstone Port City Power Capricorn Surge coach Brady Walmsley said while the twin 102-71 and 85-76 away losses against Townsville Heat and Cairns Marlins were disappointing - he did point out the positives.
On Friday night, the Power had to deal with the absence of explosive forward Casey Walker against third-placed Heat.
"He (Walker) has a sore ankle, but played against Cairns on Saturday night," Walmsley said.
Walker returned to shoot a game-high 26 points against the Marlins - a game in which the hosts fought back from a 26-15 quarter-time deficit - to narrow leads in the next two breaks.
"It was a major focus to reverse our efforts from last weekend against Cairns and I thought we turned that around," Walmsley said.
"It was just the major moments that they had the better composure down the stretch."
Matt Hancock got the Power's lead to six points just over a minute into the final quarter.
But from the moment Christian Jurlina levelled scores with 6:20 minutes left, Port City Power could not regain the lead despite triples from Walker and Hancock.
A series of missed shots by Gladstone allowed the Marlins to extend its lead up to eight points.
In the first game, the Power led at quarter and half-times before it was blown away in a 35-16 third term.
All from Townsville's starting five shot double-digit scores with Peter Crawford the pick of a solid bunch with 20 points in 22 minutes of court time.
Port City's Cirkook Riak hauled down 12 rebounds to go with his 14 points while Hancock shot 17 points (four triples) and Taylor Young collected 15 points.
Power are back at Kev Broome Stadium this Saturday night against Rockhampton
