POLL: Would Nth Qld splitting off be good for south-west?

THE talk of North Queensland splitting off from the rest of the state is a symptom of a government that 'doesn't understand regional Queensland', according to Ann Leahy.

The Warrego MP was asked about the potential issue by the Western Star, which was sparked earlier this week by Mt Isa MP Robbie Katter.

Ms Leahy was quick to state that no formal private members' bill had been pushed through, but said the discussion was a sign Labor wasn't listening to rural Queensland.

"Firstly, the question is a hypothetical. No one has seen what this process would involve," she said.

"We haven't seen a private members bill and the devil is in the details with stuff like this.

"What we're seeing across regional Queensland is the result of Labor governments who do not understand the region's needs.

"That [talk of a split] is a symptom of 20-odd years of Labor Government that has neglected regional Queensland and doesn't understand it."
