ELEVEN police officers from the southwest region travelled to the Gold Coast to be part of the policing team at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Constable Liv Smith, from the Charleville Police Station, was situated at the Hockey Centre, where she helped with crowd control and community engagement.

"We had to make sure the crowd didn't get out of hand, but also engage with the community because they wanted us to build a positive relationship,” Const Smith said. "My favourite part would have been when we got the crowd going in a big sway or dance.

"But if something had come up we would have dealt with it as police officers, but it is just completely different because you are there to police, but also engage with the community.”

Constable Chloe Guillotte, from Charleville station, who was also stationed at the Hockey Centre for the Games, said it was an exciting experience.

"I was on night shifts at the Hockey Centre, helping the army search vehicles for any contraband and items like that,” Const Guillotte said.

"It was great to see all the different organisations working together,” she said.

Both Consts Smith and Guillotte agreed working at the Commonwealth Games was different to Charleville.

"You are working a massive event with heaps of new people from all over the state, who you would have not met if you didn't do this job,” Const Smith said.

Constable Mick Kressibucher, who was appointed to traffic, agreed on the difference.

"The volume of people was the biggest difference - and not knowing the people you pulled over.”
