Playing in bush and on beach

VOLLEYBALL: Mundubbera State School's girls volleyball team had a brush with volleyball royalty when they swapped the indoors for the beach.

The girls took to the beach to compete in the Sunshine Coast Schools Beach Volleyball cup as part of Sandfest, where the girls also got the chance to meet Taliqua Clancy and playing partner Mariafe Artacho del Solar, and hold Clancy's silver Commonwealth Games medal.

Coach Adrian Brady said it was the first time the girls had played beach volleyball, due to a distinct lack of beaches in the North Burnett.

The team was made up of Ali Kassulke (captain), Sophie Zipf (vice-captain), Nicola Thorburn, Lily Wain, Ana Maile, Amelinda Moore, Darcy Lawson, Jo Kassulke and Abby Adams.

"Some of the rules are different and obviously the playing surface is sand,” Brady said.

The girls played against teams such as Mountain Creek and Burnside high schools, both well-respected and capable volleyball schools.

"Most girls in the team have attended the state All Schools Cup for two or three years,” Brady said.

"Sophie Zipf and Ana Maile were selected in the Wide Bay team for indoor this year.

Brady said similar skills were required in beach volleyball and indoor volleyball, and while some of the rules were different, the girls had a few sessions in the sand and that was it.

"Their sand fitness was definitely lacking and the fact that they had to play in the sun also threw them,” Brady said.

While competing, the side managed to beat a couple of teams which was great for their confidence.

"The team even had a quick game against Taliqua and her partner,” Brady said.

The team will be competing in the Australian All Schools Cup in December.

"This is the biggest school-based sporting event in the southern hemisphere,” Brady said.

The girls train three times a week.

Brady said the community really got behind the team.

The team is also running a trivia night fundraiser this Saturday at the golf club and will host a golf day on November 10.
