THE Wheatmen C-grade side was the toast of the Dalby club last Saturday, winning the grand final in dramatic fashion.

A late penalty goal from Sam Dean sealed the nail-biting 18-15 win over the Chinchilla River Rats.

Chinchilla was expected to claim the title after winning the minor premiership, but the Wheatmen raced out to a 15-5 half-time lead.

Two tries in 10 minutes from the River Rats set up a tight finish.

For the second week in a row, Dean kicked a late goal to win the match.

Coach Bart Turner said it was an amazing feeling to secure the title after being so close on previous occasions.

"It was pretty emotional, especially for some of the younger kids who had never played finals,” Turner said.

"When we made the finals that would have been good enough for them, but when we beat Gundy in the qualifying finals, we really believed we had a shot at winning.”

While it was jubilation for the Wheatmen, it was more heartache for the River Rats.

Last Saturday's loss was their second consecutive grand final defeat, after falling to Goondiwindi in the 2017 decider.
