Picnic petition calls for action on climate

A PASSIONATE posse of locals has called for stronger action on climate change.

The Climate Action Picnic at the Harbourside Markets drew a crowd of 330 people on Sunday.

Nationally more than 60,000 people were involved in activities demanding the government do more to address the global issue.

Coffs Harbour Greens Councillor Sally Townley was among the local speakers.

She said the successful Climate Action Picnic showed that Coffs Harbour residents wanted the new government to take stronger action on climate change."

"Now, more than ever, Australia and the world are suffering from the effects of climate change," she said.

"We have all seen the catastrophic bushfires in the Blue Mountains and the destruction and death of 10,000 people from the super typhoon in The Philippines.

"Climate change is real and our communities and economy are being impacted.

"Today's National Day of Climate Action shows that Coffs Harbour and the whole of Australia want stronger action on dangerous climate change."

Organisers of the event, Kim Towner and Erika Van Schellebeck, will deliver the National Day of Climate Action petition, with 330 local signatures, to Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker and State Member for Coffs Harbour Andrew Fraser this week.
