Pengelly to star in musical event in Sunshine Castle
MUSICAL man Dale Pengelly will star in the latest Underground Opera season, titled West End To Broadway, when it comes to Sunshine Castle, Bli Bli, early next month.
Pengelly is one of Australia's most accomplished musical theatre performers, with theatre credits including The Boy From Oz (Australian tour), Hot Shoe Shuffle (West End) and Singin' in the Rain and Chicago (Singapore, Hong Kong).
As Brisbane's Underground Opera celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, the company is launching its first season, and touring the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Rockhampton in February and March.
The show, themed "the movie musicals” will star five world-class performers as well as Pengelly, including Louise Dorsman and Lionel Theunissen, while debuting Pia Frangiosa. All will be accompanied by Brendan Murtagh.
Pengelly, who performed with UOC about eight years ago, said he was excited to return, pleased to see how the company had grown since founder and director Bruce Edwards made the bold decision to start the venture in 2007.
"Bruce has done an exceptional job in growing such a unique idea,” Pengelly said.
"It was exciting to be a part of UOC in its early years and to come back now to see how much the concept has grown is a privilege.
"Nothing really compares to the unique spaces where the Underground Opera Company performs - although, I have performed in some exceptional locations.”
Pengelly, a former Central Queensland man originally from Gladstone, studied at the Australian Ballet and has performed the world over, dancing in his early years before making the crossover to musical theatre in the mid-1990s.
"It's been a fun journey and I've met some amazing people, but it's always fantastic to perform back home in front of Queensland audiences,” he said.
"I'm very much looking forward to being a part of West End to Broadway.
"I can't wait to perform at the 150-year-old Spring Hill Reservoir and the Sunshine Castle. I'm also very excited to perform in the Capricorn Caves, being a north Queensland boy.”
Edwards said the season would feature a number of incredible solo, duet and ensemble renditions of showstoppers from the golden years of Hollywood, to the modern musical blockbusters.
"We held two seasons of West End to Broadway - in the Reservoir in 2016, and because of its popularity, we decided to tour a new version to the Sunshine Castle and Capricorn Caves, having previously brought Opera in the Castle and Opera in the Caves to these venues for more than seven years,” he said.
"It's going to be a fun season and it's great to welcome back Dale who, with his dance experience, has certainly added his touch to a few choreographed numbers.
"Joining him is UOC regular Louise Dorsman (Opera Q, Victorian Opera) and Lionel Theunissen who recently performed as Pontius Pilot for Gateway Theatre Productions' Jesus Christ Superstar on the Sunshine Coast.
"We're also debuting Pia Frangiosa who performed in Wax Theatre Productions' Carrie at the Brisbane Powerhouse and numerous Queensland Conservatorium shows.
"Our world-class lineup will be accompanied by the incomparable Brendan Murtagh.”
West End to Broadway in the Castle runs from February 3-6 at Sunshine Castle.
