TWO Toowoomba mums are leading the charge with a nation-wide initiative to create a community of mothers while at the same time "paying it forward".

Babes and Picnics Toowoomba ambassadors Danielle Strickland and Jess Klein are just two members of an almost 400-strong group of mothers in the city who get together once a month to mingle, as well as raise money for a charity.

The concept was brought to Toowoomba late last year by another mother, after initially being created by Brisbane woman Lucia de Mello who wanted a group that supported and connected mothers, while also giving back.

The initiative has gained popularity via social media, with the Toowoomba group growing from just 20 members in its closed Facebook group to almost 400, with new members joining each week.

Mum-of-four Ms Klein said while she had been to a mums group before, it was difficult with more than one child and also wanted something community-minded.

"Babes and Picnics was something that appealed to me," she said.

"I think it is a great initiative for mums to find friends, they don't have to stress about kids being kids and then the community aspect obviously."

Mum-of-two Ms Strickland said what she loved about the group was that it brought together all different kinds of mothers with no judgment and a whole lot of support.

"Especially for stay-at-home mums who are just talking to kids all day, it is such a good excuse to go and have a conversation with another adult about similar things," she said.

"It is a safe environment for people to talk about how everything is going and we raise a lot of issues, like post natal depression."

Charities chosen by the group to give back to have included Share the Dignity which donates unused sanitary items to homeless women and women in need, and the AEIOU Foundation which supports children with autism.

This Saturday they will host a special fundraiser to raise awareness and funds for infant and pregnancy loss. Chosen charities include Charlee's Baskets and SANDS. Founder Ms de Mello will also attend the event.

"I think it's (the group) is just a really great opportunity for new mums, pregnant mums, mums that have got four kids - just to get together," Ms Strickland said.

"It doesn't matter what you are doing in life - find a common ground within us and be able to talk about things you can't talk about with other people that aren't mums."

This Saturday's event will be held at Highfields cafe Abbie Lane for morning tea. To purchase a ticket, call Ms Strickland on 0427729563
