A MARYBOROUGH paramedic who entered a burning home to save two children and their mother has said he did not do anything out of the ordinary.

But, many disagree with Lyle Oppermann so much so that he was awarded with a Commendation for Brave Conduct.

Mr Oppermann did not understand what the fuss was about and was quick to point out, he did not act alone, but had his partner Simon Knight with him.

"I haven't done anything out of the ordinary to me," he said.

Mr Oppermann and Mr Knight were called to help at a house fire in Kawungan in February last year when neighbours told them children were still trapped inside.

Not seeing any flames, just smoke and unsure how far away firefighters were, the pair broke a window and Mr Oppermann went inside handing the children out to Mr Knight.

Mr Oppermann then went through the house, opened the front door for firefighters and helped them search for the mother, who was found unconscious but soon revived.

The paramedic was awarded the commendation by Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey.

Mr Oppermann, who has been a paramedic for 23-years, was reluctant to attend the awards as his partner Mr Knight was not been given the same recognition.

"I believe he is a part of the deal," he said.

"We work as a team, we don't work as an individual."

Mr Oppermann said colleagues have told him they would not have done the same thing, but he is not so sure.
