Panel to examine alleged breaches
TABLING documents in parliament about a matter before the courts has the potential to land Member for Burnett Rob Messenger in hot water.
Mr Messenger is to face the Integrity, Ethics and Parliamentary Privileges Committee for allegedly breaching a standing order.
Speaker ohn Mickel referred the matter to the committee during the first session of state parliament on Tuesday morning.
The alleged breach relates to documents Mr Messenger tabled on May 10 which referred to a matter before the courts.
“The tabled document refers to criminal charges instituted almost a year ago and states, ‘...criminal charges are now scheduled to be heard in a Bundaberg court on 3 September 2010’,” Mr Mickel said on Tuesday.
“However, the Clerk’s delegate has made inquiries with the Bundaberg Police Child Protection Unit and it has been confirmed that the matter referred to in the tabled paper is currently before the courts.”
It is the second time in the past four weeks the controversial politician has been referred to the ethics committee.
The first incident related the same documents, but Mr Messenger allegedly breached a different standing order by allegedly failing to properly obscure a child’s name in the documents handed up to the House.
Mr Messenger said he would be making a full-throated defence when the matters were taken to the parliamentary committee.
“This is a matter that is special and unique,” he said.
“It’s a matter that had corruption that the highest level in the child safety department,” he said.
Mr Messenger said he believed the matter had also embarrassed Child Safety Minister Phil Reeves.
Mr Messenger said he felt he could talk more freely about the matter outside of parliament than when he was in the chamber.
The Member for Burnett said he also felt the matter was worthy of a Royal Commission into the dealings within child safety.
A date for the hearing before the Integrity, Ethics and Parliamentary Privileges Committee is yet to be set.
The new committee was officially elected yesterday and are yet to discuss how the matter will be handled.
