Packing her bags

COOLUM State High School student Sarina Petersen is preparing to pack her bags and board a plane for the trip of a lifetime.

The Year 10 student was selected as a winner of the Tokyo Global Citizens of the Future Scholarship, which includes return flights from Brisbane to Tokyo, accommodation with two host families and the opportunity to attend two Japanese High Schools.

"I'm so excited to go to Japan and am looking forward to being welcomed into their culture," she said.

"I won't have time to get home sick, I've never been overseas before but staying with two host families and attending school will keep me busy."

The Department of Education and Training, in collaboration with the Tokyo Metopolitan Board of Education, is providing trip to the country's capital.

The program aims to provide Sarina with a unique international learning opportunity immersed in a language and cultural environment to experience how science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects are taught internationally.

"It's a chance for me to see real world examples of the importance of STEM and partnerships between the schools and industry,” Sarina said.

"Once completing High School, I'd like to obtain a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Japanese, to then teach English in Japan.

"This trip will hopefully be a taste of what's to come."

The tour is only open to students who are nominated by their Principal, and the application process is very involved.

Sarina is one of only 15 students in the state awarded the opportunity to attend the inaugural tour.
