Overwhelming number of people recycling e-waste
THE Paget Waste Management Centre has been overwhelmed by the number of people recycling their electronic waste.
Mackay Regional Council and DHL's National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme have been working together since Monday to provide residents with the opportunity to drop off unwanted TVs and computers for free.
Waste, health and regulatory portfolio councillor Lawrence Bonaventura said the week-long scheme had "exceeded all expectations".
He urged people to "get in quick" and drop off unwanted goods while it was free.
"We have filled a 15 cubic metre skip bin each day since we started and there are another two ready to go," he said.
"I would say we could expect even more people coming in over the weekend."
Cr Bonaventura said it was the first time there had been an e-waste collection at the Paget Waste Management Centre.
"I do believe something like this will happen again and we are looking at a more permanent solution for ewaste in the region," he said.
The unwanted electronic goods will be taken to Townsville where they will be dismantled.
Components that could be recycled and reused would be, Cr Bonaventura said.
"I advise people to get here before Sunday otherwise they'll have to pay the normal price to take things to the tip.
"Every time I see a skipful it's great - not only is it being recycled, it's not becoming landfill."
