Our rising golf star
GOLF: Chinchilla golf talent Brandon Pareau is a young and dedicated golfer to watch out for in the coming years.
Pareau, 15, has not just proven his skills in front of his home crowd at Chinchilla Golf Club, he was selected for the second time by the South West Queensland Golf Association to represent the district at the annual Hills Golf Academy Camp in Jimboomba, Queensland.
During the school holidays, Brandon attended the five-day camp, receiving professional golf instruction, attending lectures, undertaking rounds of golf and debriefing analyses, and competing in the Hills Junior Classic (a Greg Norman Masters open qualifier).
Hills director of golf Tom Berndt said Brandon made some good progress with his game.
"He worked very hard during the camp and was very attentive when it came to the lectures in the evening,” Berndt said.
He ran second in the best gross for the under 16s in the junior classic, shooting a total of 151.
Brandon started playing golf at the age of five, riding on the back of his father Sonny's buggy, when he went for a hit out at the local golf course.
He got his first set of plastic golf clubs that Christmas and, by the age of eight, upgraded to a proper junior set to start playing in competitions.
Choosing golf over football back then, Brandon is happy with his decision and said his dream was to become a professional golf player.
" I like winning and playing golf is fun,” he said.
"I also love going to the gym and at the moment I am just getting the strength up, working the core so I can get good extension through the core for my swing.
"I try to get 15 hours of training in a week after school.”
Brandon's next competition is the 2017 Greg Norman Junior Masters, held at Palmer Colonial at the Gold Coast, where he will compete in the age division 15 years and younger.
