Our Mafia to keep dealing in fake drugs
OUR Mafia, the Mackay business responsible for distributing synthetic legal drugs around the country, has delivered a firm message to authorities.
"As long as it's legal we'll send it there".
The group is part of a growing trade in designer drugs, most of which are so new authorities haven't had time to analyse and regulate them.
Yesterday, the Daily Mercury reported the group was once again distributing legal drugs using its website and adult stores following an extended hiatus.
The group ceased production in April last year and has cited family reasons for its absence.
One of the owners of the business, who wished to be called The Godfather, said there was no difference between his products and cigarettes.
"If you walk into a Caltex or BP, or any service station around Australia, you can buy a cigarette and the government supports it, and many people die every year from it," he said.
"They cracked up a stink for a little while and they made plenty of money on tax and they're happy they're still killing thousands of people, so the ethical boundaries we come across are no worse than anyone else."
The Godfather said he had personally tried and tested each one of Our Mafia's products, and said there was a user beware warning with each substance.
"The people who do buy our products already know what to do. We spread awareness of how to use this," he said.
"The retailers do the same thing, pass on the same information, and it comes with a warning label."
The group also denied its trademark product, Shaman's Dust, had ever contained the banned chemical, MDPV (Methylenedioxypyrovalerone).
Queensland Police would not comment specifically on the existence of Our Mafia, due to "operational" reasons.
However, a police spokeswoman warned against using the drugs.
"While advertised as 'legal highs', the chemical compounds found in these drugs are dangerous and are not herbal or natural alternatives to 'real drugs'," she said.
"They contain synthetic compounds, which are toxic and extremely dangerous.
"The QPS has and continues to prosecute offenders, with some people charged for offences such as trafficking in dangerous drugs and the production of a dangerous drug."
