LISTEN 'Dream big': Alex Staines in talks with Origin greats

OUR FOOTY dream looks to be edging closer with a couple of State of Origin greats talking about either bringing Monday Night with Matty Johns or The NRL Footy Show to Gladstone.

What's confirmed? The XXXX Queensland Maroons State of Origin team is coming to town on June 14.

To ride that momentum mayor Matt Burnett has invited both shows to broadcast from Gladstone that week.

This morning it was confirmed by GAPDL board member Alex Staines, who says he helped the mayor get in touch with the television networks, that there had been discussions with "a couple of former Origin greats".

"We have been talking about some ideas about how we can showcase our region to a state and national audience," he said.

"We can't say too much more at the moment because we don't want to jeopardise the talks by getting too excited too early. They are preliminary talks at the moment but the responses are heading in the right direction."

He wouldn't confirm which television show had been in contact with them but did say both shows had received the mayor's letter.

Speaking with his GAPDL hat on, Mr Staines said he wanted the shows to showcase the region and bring some inspirational characters to Gladstone at a time when the town was doing it tough.

He said even as an adult he was inspired by the Maroons players and the past players who are on the rugby league shows.

Gladstone resident Josh Mitchell who was on the NRL Footy Show in June said most people he knew would go to the show if it was in Gladstone.

"Anyone who is a rugby league fan would want to go," he said. "The entertainment centre would be a good place for them to use. They had it in a similar place to the entertainment centre but it wasn't as much of a theatre. But it would definitely be good to have it there."
