One whole melting pot of fun
IPSWICH will be home to a multicultural Mecca this Saturday when Ipswich Multicultural Projects hosts its 60th International Café.
Organiser Heddy Keogh said the group would theme the café around a number of different cultures, as opposed to focussing performances and meals on just one.
"We will have artists and food from Jamaica, Africa, Brazil, the Middle East and Ireland - it will be one big multicultural melting pot," she said.
"I think people feel very proud of sharing their cultures in Ipswich, it's something people have really liked and gotten behind."
Heddy said the International Café events had been a success for more than 10 years due to the rapport between the live performers and audience members.
"The dancing, poetry, art and food give people a chance to get involved," she said.
"It's about bringing the community together."
Latin American dancers Daniel Pinto and Claire Moore-Carter said they were excited to be one of the acts performing at the celebrations.
"It's an honour for people to take interest in the culture I think," Mr Pinto said.
"We want to give the audience a taste of what we do and share our passion with the people of Ipswich."
The multicultural menu includes Irish damper with African-inspired soup, a Jamaican rice cheese bake and Brazilian pork with orange sauce followed by Middle Eastern baklava.
The cafe will be held at the Masonic Hall on Roderick and Nicholas Sts from 6.45pm.
