One Planet Week launches Monday

ARE you unsure about how much you would have to change your life to help the planet?

Well give yourself a chance to explore the possibilities next week by being part of OzGreen's One Planet Week, which is being launched on Monday.

The idea is for participants to pledge to reduce their use of resources for one week and then hopefully beyond, when they see it is not so hard.

The initiative came out of last year's Youth Leading the World Congress, which saw over 2000 young people from Australia and across the world come together and brainstorm ideas for a sustainable future.

"When we did the calculations, we found to sustain our Australian lifestyle it would require the resources of more than four planets," OzGreen founder Sue Lennox said.

"So the kids came up with this idea to help change that."

Mrs Lennox said the aim was to inspire the wider community to make the changes that would reduce our impact on the planet.

"We are asking participants to choose at least eight easy, three challenging and one long term action in the five main areas of water, waste, energy, travel and food. It's not a big ask when you realise the impact we are having on the planet - really we need to do as much as we can as soon as we can.

"Of course we all need to give stuff up otherwise we'll never get out of this mess, but there has also been a lot of fear-mongering about how we will be thrown back into the Dark Ages - it can be as simple as taking shorter showers or walking to work right up to the big changes like installing a water tank or holidaying close to home to avoid flying.

"This is a chance to try it for a week, see how easy it really is and be inspired to continue because of how good it makes you feel!"

She said while the idea was serious, actually getting involved would be fun as participants would be connected on Facebook to exchange ideas and be examples to others in the community.
