On the lookout for fantastic views of our fair city

MT TABOR, Bracker Rd and Wentworth St have been tipped as the contenders for the place that offers the most breathtaking views of the city.

Warwick has been without an official sightseeing spot since last March, when the Rosenthal Heights Lookout was removed because of safety concerns.

The structure was built back in 1978 and for decades was the place to go to soak up the beauty of the Rose City, either under the light of the stars or in the daylight.

It is now being used as a training tool for SES volunteers and its removal has left Warwickites wondering where to go to see the sights.

Visitor Information Centre's Madonna Pacek said there were a few hotspots that offered killer city views.

"I always like the view of the whole town that you get at the Alexander Motel, on the corner of Wentworth and Wood Sts," she said.

"Just standing on the corner or walking into the motel has a beautiful view of the town and it is lovely at night.

"You can see the Swanfels Valley, Mt Tabor and all the main range and nestled down behind it is Warwick itself and the spire of St Mary's Church."

The Daily News took the issue to Facebook yesterday and asked readers to nominate the place they would like to see a lookout in Warwick.

The results were a mixed bag, proving Warwick offers more than a few good places to enjoy the sights.

Ray Black said Mt Tabor was his pick as the place with the views but said the area around the Warwick Golf Club should also be considered.

Helena Moore said she knew the spot that had the best views but doubted it would be a practical position for a lookout structure.

"Bracker Rd does have great views, but wouldn't want it situated near Scare Hill and attract(ing) hoons," she said.

"There are already a lot of hoons on this road and a lot of little kids that play in that street."

Others said the original is simply the best and there was no going past the home of the former iconic lookout on Glen Rd.

Barbara Thorne said that site "was and still is the best place".

"But I do like Louise Buckley's idea (of having) another one out on Mt Tabor as well because from Glen Rd you can't see the other side of town near the back of East St," she said.

"To have two lookouts would be good, especially when flooding is happening. You (would) get to see from Mt Tabor if you live on the northern side of the river and from Glen Rd if you live on the southern side of the river.

"The pictures would be almost aerial shots then."

One person who was especially saddened to see the former lookout pulled down was Shane Stidolph.

"I wanted to do something there when I proposed to Amy Lee Clacy, but then was told it had been pulled down," he said.

Southern Downs Regional Council director of engineering Peter See said the council had not considered replacing the former lookout with a similar structure, there or elsewhere.

He added that Everest Reserve is near the former Glen Rd location and is accessible for the same views.

What do you think? Should there be another lookout structure in Warwick and where is the best location?
