On her way to a dream

ISABELLA Nichols will attend an international training camp in Indonesia in April, to follow her dream of becoming a professional surfer.

To help Isabella get to the camp at Telos Island Lodge in northern Indonesia, her sponsor Hive Swimwear and her parents conducted a major fundraising raffle in the lead-up to Australia Day.

Local businesses generously donated an impressive list of prizes, while supporters, friends and complete strangers bought tickets in support of the Coolum grom's burgeoning surfing career.

Last Thursday, Isabella held court at Coolum Surf in Birtwill St to draw the prizes which included a surfboard, wetsuit, swimwear and accommodation and dinner vouchers.

The 14-year-old will commence a special training program designed by Olympic sports physiotherapist Peter Hogg, from Noosa Sports and Spinal Physiotherapy.

"Isabella Nichols is one of the country's most naturally talented junior surfers," Mr Hogg said.

"From a sports talent identification point of view, Isabella has some qualities that set her apart.

"This girl could be a track hurdler because she has got the height or she could be a marathon runner because she has got the cardio endurance.

"Isabella wants to be a surfer and she has the mindset and determination to do it."

Mr Hogg said his strength and conditioning programs would include many of the traditional and modern training concepts and programs used by successful winter athletes, including Olympic gold medallists.

In recent months, Isabella has won the under 16 Ocean and Earth International Teenage Rampage series, finished second in the under 16 girls at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles and won both the under 14 and under 16 Rip Curl GromSearch titles.

Isabella hopes to be a real contender in the 2012 U16 Australian Surf Titles in Tasmania and is setting her sights on the Junior Pro series.

Isabella and her family thanked local businesses and the community for their support.
